Altered Beast was one of Sega's first big franchises, but like so many of them it fell into the pit of obscurity after its initial debut. However, now it's making a comeback on the PlayStation 2, thanks to WOW Entertainment, one of Sega's in-house development teams. For those of you unfamiliar with the original, you play the role of a military operative sent to investigate a genetic outbreak in a small West Coast town. However, soon after arrival you are hunted down by various nasty creatures and haunted by events from your past. Soon you realise that the only way to overcome evil is to become more than evil, by using your darkest power; the ability to tranform yourself into a variety of powerful beasts!
Altered Beast allows you to morph into eight different creatures, each with their own special abilities and combat techniques. The game even allows you to manually manipulate your DNA to assign different strengths to each beast. As well as being an action game, with huge 3D environments to explore each complete with a large boss encounter, you must also uncover clues by interacting with non-playable characters to follow the twisted tale of genetic experimentation that the town hides and reveal your true origin.
Although these screenshots are fairly early they still show promise, and the game idea certainly seems an interesting one. We hope to have more details and screenshots as the title's 2004 release date gets closer.
