At last, a racing game that is arcade-orientated and not a simulation! Don't get me wrong, the Gran Turismo series is an excellent trio of games, but ever since the original one appeared six years ago nearly every new racing game has been turned into a simulation in an attempt to tap in on its market. Even the arcade roots of the Ridge Racer series are to be forgotten in its latest incarnation, leaving arcade racing fans with hardly anything to sink their teeth into. Fortunately AM2, one of Sega's development teams and the guys behind some very popular arcade racers, have announced Outrun 2 - a racer that is all about driving as fast as possible to reach a checkpoint before the time limit runs out, and should have nothing to do with buying and tweaking cars!
Those who owned a Megadrive may remember the original game, which was pretty innovative for its time. Instead of being restricted to a set track, each course had multiple branches, with each branch in turn having its own sub-branches, making for some very complex levels. We've been promised that this style of play will be retained for the sequel, and should give the game some great replay value; something that many arcade racers are criticised heavily for lacking. However, despite this being an arcade-orientated racer, it does contain officially licensed cars. Thanks to their previous dealings with Ferrari (which produced the excellent F355 Challenge on the Dreamcast), AM2 have been able to include many of the Italian motor company's finest models in their latest game.
Although Outrun 2 is currently being developed for the arcades, it'll be running on the Chihiro arcade board, which arcade fanatics will recall as being based upon the Xbox's hardware. This should mean that an Xbox port will be relatively easy to do, so we'd be surprised not to see it appearing on release lists for Summer 2004. As usual, we'll keep you posted on developments, but until then check out these early screenshots!
