29th July 2003:
Japanese mythology is no longer boring
Otogi hopes to make Japanese folklore interesting. You think we are kidding? Check out the screenshots, pessimists!
Posted by Chris Barnett - Xbox - UK and Europe

From Software have been busy working on a game based upon Japanese legends and folklore. Otogi is the story of one man in ancient Japan who encounters various aspects of Japanese folklore as he fends off an army of demons.

The game is a 3D action game where all the scenery and objects can be destroyed, which is rather bold considering that it boasts 25 massive levels.
To people outside of Japan this game may sound a little average, but look on it as a Japanese version of Brothers Grimm tales and you will understand the appeal to Japanese people. For the rest of the world, it can serve as an ideal way of showing how interesting these stories are when it is released in September.

As the mythology of Japan is so colourful, the graphics are promised to live up to the subject matter. And having seen a Japanese version of the game running, we can say (with slight controversy) that it is the prettiest Xbox game yet. To see for yourself, check out our new screens below.
