13th September 2001:
Duelfield
We checked out a new online strategy game at this year's ECTS, and the good news is that the main game can be downloaded for free!

Duelfield is a new multiplayer game from Sismoplay which will soon be available over the internet in two forms, one of which is free for you to download and play, and the other (containing special features) will be subscription-based. It is described as a turn based strategy game however it is more like a cross between an RPG and chess that basically consists of a board and two teams each of which can choose a variety of characters which cost varying amounts of cash. Four creatures can be placed on the board per team and the basic objective is to kill the opposing player's characters. When a creature is killed it is possible to replace it with another character providing that you bought it before the start of the game. Each character has its own set of special attacks which cost a certain amount of experience points, which are earned every time you damage an opponent's piece, and the amount gained is proportional to the amount of damage done. Also, as your characters gain experience points they become more powerful allowing them to do more damage and to learn new special attacks.

As mentioned before, the game comes in two versions. The first is completely free and allows you to play as much as you want, however there is a limit to the amount of experience you can gain. For those who are sufficiently dedicated again there is a version with a $5 monthly subscription where the characters can achieve higher levels of experience and use even more deadly attacks. As well as this they have made the download in two parts, allowing you to download just the basics required to play the game if you have a slow connection, while those with faster connections can also download the animations which appear in the corner of the screen when you make an attack. The fact that this is a turn based game also favours those with slow connections since there is no continuous transfer of information meaning virtually no lag. Whether this game will catch on remains to be seen, however as it is free it is going to reach a wide audience and, if not a hit, it may well acquire some dedicated players.

Next Level Gaming will be back soon with an update on how you can download the free version of the game - stay tuned for more information!
