9th September 2002:
No One Lives Forever 2 (ECTS 2002)
After playing the game at ATI's stand during ECTS, we're pleased to report that it's coming along well
Posted by Marc Hull - PC - UK and Europe

The original No One Lives Forever allowed players to take control of secret agent Cate Archer in an action-packed first-person shooter that made fun of all the old 60's spy film cliches. However, now the terrorist organisation H.A.R.M is back with another sceme for global domination, and they've summoned some of the world's best assasins to take care of Agent Archer before she can thwart their plans again.

This time, the game has a greater emphasis on stealth and evasion than before, which is helped along by the addition of a 'look around corners without being seen' ability, and shadowed spots in each level that provide ideal hiding places. However, the main improvement can be seen in the graphics, which now use the new LithTech Jupiter engine (for all you techies out there). This, claim the developers, has allowed over 30 times the detail of the original game to be lavished on each of the levels, and provides a greater sense of atmosphere through accurately projected shadows cast by each character. An improved particle system also allows for better effects such as snow, fire or realistic grass that sways gently in a breeze.

The level we played at the show certainly looked impressive enough, with water accurately reflecting the level and all manner of lighting effects providing a great overall look to the game. The enemies we encountered were also pretty neat, with smooth animations and fairly intelligent AI responses to our pot-shots at them. In the final game, characters will supposedly react realistically to the world around them, going as far as to take naps, fill in paperwork or use the rest room when relaxed. However, once the player has been spotted, you can expect them to move for cover, sound alarms, or retreat before summoning back-up.

However, possibly the best feature promised for the finished product is the multiplayer section, where up to 4 players work cooperatively against AI opponents in specially designed missions that take place behind the scenes of the single player game. An impressive range of different scenarios will be on offer, including ones where you have to work together to collect intelligence data, cleanup after a mission, and even rescue the game's main character, Cate Archer.

So far, No One Lives Forever 2 is looking pretty good, and hopefully the weird-and-wonderful range of weapons, diverse level locations and humour of the game will produce another great first person shooter this October.
