13th April 2004:
Van Helsing
Creatures of the night beware, Vivendi Universal are planning to transport gamers back to the macabre world of 19th century Transylvania.
Posted by John Grothier - PlayStation 2,Xbox,Game Boy Advance - UK and Europe

This May will see the release of Van Helsing on the big screen. Writer-director Stephen Sommers, (The Mummy and The Mummy Returns), once again draws inspiration from the studio's classic horror properties in an all-new action adventure film entitled Van Helsing. Bram Stoker's fabled monster hunter is summoned to a distant Eastern European land on a quest to vanquish evil, and he will have to fight legendary monsters Dracula, Frankenstein's monster and the Wolf Man. Vivendi Universal are releasing a third-person action game based on the film for release this May on the PlayStation 2 and Xbox, with a special Game Boy Advance version also in the pipeline.

After seeing the game running we are really impressed with Val Helsing, the fighting in the game remined us of a cross between Buffy The Vampire Slayer and Devil May Cry, and the glorious gothic look of the game is suitably dark and moody. Van Helsing, the third-person action game, will transport players back to the macabre world of 19th century Transylvania - home to the legendary Dracula, Wolf Man and Frankenstein's monster. As the renowned monster hunter Van Helsing, players must hunt down, face and destroy the evil that inhabits these ancient lands before darkness engulfs the world.

The developers, Saffire Studios, are working very closely with the members of the Van Helsing film production so gamers can step into the shoes of the fearsome monster hunter. Players will control Van Helsing at key momentts from the film, allowing them to fight some huge battles with some of cinema's greatest horror creations. Gamers will also have exclusive access to a backstory that they will not get to see in theatres. Vivendi Universal promise players a cinematic action experience packed with nightmarish creatures, furious combat and daring escapes.

As Van Helsing, players must progreess through darkest Transylvania and the strongholds of Castle Frankenstein and Castle Dracula, where untold fiends and evil minions lurk. As well as fighting the legendary dark prince Dracula, Igor, the Wolf Man, and Frankenstein's monster, players must also do battle with a host of original creatures created for the game. These will include stone gargoyles, fell sprits and banshees, to name but a few. Van Helsing has a devastating arsenal of melee and ranged weapons to help him on his quest, including tojo blades, scimitars, pistols, a shotgun and a hand-cranked gatling gun for maximum carnage. And if all that fails he can dish out double-fisted damage to his enemies. Gamers will also be able to utilize Van Helsing's signature grappling hook to escape impending doom, explore the gameworld and unleash devastating fatality attacks.
