Burnout 2: Point of Impact
Reckless driving is rewarded in this high speed, adrenalin fuelled racing sequel.

Burnout, released last year by Acclaim, was an incredibly fast-paced racer with some of the most outrageous crashes ever seen in a video game. The game managed to recreate perfectly the sense of speed and the feel of 'dangerous driving'. Now Acclaim are set to release Burnout 2: Point of Impact, and Silicon Fusion have been lucky enough to play what we think is set to become one of the years biggest hits on the PlayStation 2.
Such films as 'The Fast And The Furious' and 'Speed' inspired Burnout 2: Point of Impact, and the game is based in six all-new United States inspired locations, featuring Los Angeles, The Rocky Mountains, New Mexico and a busy international airport. Burnout 2 features a staggering thirty-two different stages to race, brand new cars, and three different types of driver AI.
The first thing we noticed upon booting up the preview code was the fantastic presentation; the in-game menus, car and track selection screens are all beautifully designed. Burnout 2 offers the would-be boy racer fourteen all-new vehicles to race, with another seven secret cars to unlock including a police car, hotrods and stock cars.
The code we played had three tracks to race; Interstate 88 Loop, Big Surf Shore and Crystal Summit Vista. The Interstate 88 Loop is very reminiscent of the tracks from the original Burnout, but one thing we noticed straight away, was the improved handling of the cars. In the first game crashes were spectacular, but a little bit all to frequent. This time around, however, the handling of the vehicles has been refined so you can scrape past other cars, sparks are sent flying, and you only get the stunning crash replays when you really write off your car. This makes for a much-improved game play experience, where the original Burnout could be frustrating at times, Burnout 2: Point of Impact is pure racing fun.
The two other tracks in Point of Impact are really spectacular Big Surf Shore allows for costal racing with multiple routes along the track. The attention to detail is staggering, and this time there is not a 'jaggy' to be seen. Crystal Summit Vista is an icy track set high up in the mountains, allowing for challenging race along windy roads, in and out of alpine-like villages, with treacherous snowy conditions. Weather effects are also new to Burnout 2 - rain, fog, and snow all feature in game and look incredibly realistic. A new boost system in which player earn boost by near misses, driving on the wrong side of the road, and generally driving dangerously, all fill up the meter, then by holding down the R1 trigger button, you can unleash an adrenalin fuelled power surge!
Another new feature for Burnout 2 is the Pursuit Mode. Here you take on the role of a highway cop, complete with police car, and have to chase various different vehicles and force them off the road. This is great fun even if though the police siren can grate after a while. There is also an Offensive Driving Mode, which trains you in the art of driving dangerously - which is what this fantastic title is really all about.
The graphics in this preview of Burnout 2: Point of impact are really spectacular, no jaggies, sixty frames per second frame rate, an incredible sense of speed, and truly glorious visuals - the PlasyStation 2 has not seen such next generation effects before.
Burnout 2: Point of Impact will be released on the 11th October for the PlayStation 2, with Xbox and GameCube versions in the pipeline.
