The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring was properly one of the best films that has be made for many a year. Faithful to Tolkien's masterpiece, the film leads the viewer from the sleepy, idyllic Shire into the dark and terrifying world of the Dark Lord Sauron. As a huge fan of the books, (a book that we think is required reading), the film was masterfully directed and really brought J.R.R. Tolkien's words to life. Now Vivendi Universal Interactive are planning to do just that with their upcoming Xbox game which is based on the first of the three books, The Fellowship of the Ring.
Lead Frodo, Gandalf and Aragorn in an epic quest to rid Middle-earth of the One Ring. Players can now travel through the world of Middle-earth from the peaceful Shire into the darkness of Moria, trying to protect the One Ring from Sauron. The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring is a third-person action adventure in which players can explore fully the massive environments of Middle-earth, while puzzle solving and fighting various enemies such as Orcs, Black Riders and the evil Balrog. The game allows for complete control over the entire Fellowship, so at times the player will be responsible for controlling up to nine characters at any one time.
The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring features an array of next generation graphical effects and features including, environment maps, which will create stunning water and reflective surface effects. Bump maps that will give the many different characters and types of environment much more detail. Real time shadows, pixel lighting technology and something called 'volumetric fog', which will give ground areas a specific fog type effect. An incredibly high polygon count will give all of the characters in the game, as well as trees, plants, and other environmental details, huge amounts of depth. Full screen anti-aliasing and sophisticated multi-layer texturing allows for spectacular effects ranging from the subtle shine of worn armour, to sunlight sparkling off the surface of a river.
If you thought that the graphics in The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring sounds a fantastic achievement, wait until you hear it! The game will feature Dolby 5.1 Surround Sound, with full utilization of the Xbox's on board DSP, which will create realistic ambient in-game sounds. Microsoft DirectMusic and 3D positional sound effects will totally immerse the player in the world of Middle-earth. A dramatic cinematic soundtrack dynamically layers throughout the game, and will change with in-game events and storylines.
The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring will also feature a wide-screen mode and will support hi-definition televisions, for those of you lucky enough to own one.
Join the Fellowship on 8th November, but in the mean time enjoy these new screen shots, including some in the wide-screen hi-definition format.
