Burnout: Revenge
We take a look at what's new with the fourth incarnation of the recklessly enjoyable Burnout series.
Posted by John Grothier - Xbox,PlayStation 2 - UK and Europe

Criterion's Burnout franchise is not only one of the most successful racing franchises of recent years, but here at Silicon Fusion the Burnout series are our preferred racing titles - ever. This coming September will see the fourth of developers Criterion's series with Burnout: Revenge, due for release on the Xbox and PlayStation 2. This time it's not about winning. It's not about riding on dubs or gaudy neon lights. It's about an utter disregard for the rules of road and total domination. This time it's personal. This time it's about revenge.

Burnout: Revenge promises to strap gamers into the fastest, most dangerous racer on the road, as players will have to fight dirty or they will go down in flames - the only rule is complete automotive anarchy. This latest title is built up from the ground for unprecedented destruction; as Burnout Revenge challenges gamers to exact their revenge on rush hour traffic, vindictive rival racers and anything else that gets between them and the finish line.

The game will featuring multi-level tracks designed for fighting, wicked vertical takedowns, explosive new crashbreakers, new gameplay modes and wide open 'Crash Courses', (our personal favourite), for epic crash sequences that the developers promise will put Hollywood to shame. Burnout: Revenge will redefine speed and aggression for the ultimate in vehicular combat.

Not only will Burnout: Revenge feature a strong single player mode, when gamers are ready to take their rage on the road, a massive suite of online modes and features open up endless possibilities to slam, shunt and stonewall new enemies all over the world. The online play will be for up to six players for both Xbox and PlayStation 2.

Revenge is Sweet and it's not about winning, it's about vengeance. So, an all-new revenge meter has been installed, which tracks underhanded tactics and leads gamers down the path to the ultimate payback. So, fight dirty and you will be rewarded. The other traffic in this latest instalment will feature more then ever before, and now every vehicle on the road is in play and a potential target, or if you wish - a weapon. Ram traffic into your rivals, slam cars into vicious combo-based pile-ups and lay waste to everything in sight, you must not fear traffic - fight it.

One of the more interesting sounding new modes of play is the 'Traffic Attack' mode, which pits gamers against the clock in a mad dash for destruction. It's not about dodging traffic; it's about levelling it by any means necessary. The new 'Crash' modes are new fully open-ended crash junctions. They have multiple start points, complex, vertically-oriented tracks and hundreds of cars literally begging to be decimated.

While racing if you manage to punish a rival enough and they'll develop a grudge, and then you'll need to take care of them personally in an all-new grudge match. A good racing game boils down to how good the tracks are, and the developers promise that Burnout: Revenge's tracks are loaded with massive jumps, multiple paths and nasty chokepoints to deliver the ultimate brutal car combat. Vertical takedowns and in-race crashbreakers open up new avenues for destruction.

If you thought the crashes in the last Burnout title were good, you haven't seen anything yet - the car deformation is more than three times that of Burnout 3: Takedown, this time gamers can literally rip cars to shreds. Burnout: Revenge will feature real world locations with tracks spanning three continents and inspired by real-world cities - from Detroit to Rome to Tokyo.

Stay tuned to Silicon Fusion for much more on Burnout: Revenge - soon.
