If you go out into the street and ask a random sample of people what they consider to be the best Fantasy series of the last century, many will answer
The Lord of the Rings
. There will however be a decent number that will answer completely differently, they will tell you that it is CS Lewis'
Narnia
.
Now in the wake of the three LOTR films, this Christmas there will be a potential inheritor to the crown of the Christmas Fantasy film and no surprises are sprung when it is revealed as being the most famous of the Narnia Books.
The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe
is the first in an expected series of films. Now we can lift the lid on game based on that film,
The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe
to present it with it's full titular glory.
Now with the release of the game set for November, in order to tie in with the films US release more screenshots have emerged and as expected the game itself follows fairly closely the action of the film, which in turn seems to be faithful to the spirit of the book.
Narnia, a land brought into being by the Great Lion Aslan, is locked in the grip of a winter that has lasted a hundred years, a winter created by the malevolent magical abilities of the White Witch, in order to old those who dwell in Narnia in thrall to her evil will. It is a place of Fawns, talking Beavers, a realm where despite being caught in a chill and bitter grip the spirit of those who live await the return of Aslan and the promised salvation.
Now, after playing a game of Hide and Seek, four World War Two evacuees find themselves treading though the snowy wastes of Narnia. Seemingly by accident they find that they are to be the saviours of the land, those able to help Aslan, along with an ancient prophecy of hope and light to once and for all defeat the nefarious Witch and once more bring Narnia to the rule of good.
Hurrah!
Within the game itself, the four, Peter, Susan, Edmund and Lucy must work in concert with their unique abilities to thwart the Witches minions, who include Cyclops, Werewolves, Horrors and many, many more - all lovingly created for the film by the Weta Workshop, they of LOTR fame so bringing an added level of depth to the game itself as you battle the harrowing menaces that are thrown your way.
European PlayStation 2 players will also benefit from an exclusivity license that means they get to play the game a full five months ahead of those on the Xbox or GameCube, whilst PC and Handheld owners will also benefit from the November release. A marketing coup for Sony.
More when we find it dangling on a Lamppost.
