Transworld Surf
Experience the life of a pro surfer in the beautiful aquatic world of Transworld Surf

Let me first just say that I’m not a surfer. I have an aversion not to the rubber suits, but more to parts of my body getting bitten off by a shark. It looks great fun, but I’d rather keep all my limbs intact – how would I play video games otherwise? So when Transworld Surf arrived I thought I could safely surf in the comfort of my own living room, with my girlfriend being the only dangerous thing nearby.
Transworld Surf, from Infogrames, features real-life surfing pros in over ten real-world surfing spots including Todos Santos (California), Hossegor (France), Kirra point (Australia), Witches Rock (Costa Rica), Tavarua (Fiji), and there is even a secret bonus location to unlock.
Transworld Surf is unlike any other game I have played before; it’s all about catching waves and performing tricks. There is no race, no course, just lots of waves - and the occasional aquatic wildlife. Yes, just like in real life - sharks, alongside with dolphins, are swimming in the surf, and yes you can get bitten. Transworld Surf features a ‘Karma Meter’ – depending on the how you interact with the other surfers and sea creatures your ‘Karma’ is affected. If you are careful to respect the unspoken rules of surfing, the other surfers will respect you for that – but be warned if you are reckless the other surfers and sea life will make your surf as difficult as possible. That said there are advantages to be found with ‘Bad Karma’.
Performing tricks in the surf is the main aim of the game, and Transworld Surf features a huge array of basic, advanced and special tricks for your chosen surfer to perform. At first you will simply be carving and turning, but after some practice you will be able to pull off some awesome stunts and combos, which you can then enjoy again using the stunning replay system. The first thing you notice with this title is the incredible water and wave effects. Utilising the incredible power of the Xbox, the waves in Transworld Surf look extremely real and they move and crash convincingly.
In career mode you can begin a pro tour career that will take you all around the world. In each section surfers are given a list of goals to complete, and for each goal completed you will receive a goal point. These are needed to unlock new challenges and surfing locations. As well as career mode, there is also the option to surf in any location that has been unlocked, and also a free surf mode without any time constraints. There is also a multiplayer mode which features ‘King of the Wave’, where the surfer who remains standing on the wave the longest wins.
The graphics in Transworld Surf as I mentioned before are spectacular, the water and wave effects in particular are faithfully recreated, and viewing your performance with the replay system looks just like your watching a surfing movie. Each of the pro surfers are extremely well animated and all have special moves that look stunning if you get them right. Sound too fits the game perfectly with some great music from real bands including Hopelifter, the Line, Pepper and the Plug Uglies. There is an option for both stereo and Dolby surround sound.
Overall if you are a fan of surfing you will love this game; there’s nothing better than spending an endless summer in God’s hands as you ride that surf.
