Fur Fighters: Viggo's Revenge
Furry Warriors, Heavy Artillery, Kidnapped Babies, Evil Villains - all that in the first 10 minutes!
Posted by John Grothier - PlayStation 2 - UK and Europe

Have you ever wanted to be James Bond? ‘Course you have.
Ever wanted to be a furry animal? Oh, have you really?!
Well now you can be both!

Bizarre Creations and Acclaim have teamed up to bring the PS2 some much needed action adventure with Fur Fighters: Viggo's Revenge. Althought it was released last year on the Dreamcast as Fur Fighters: Plus, this is no ordinary port.

You play the part of all six of the Fur Fighters, an elite squad of highly trained, special force, cuddly animals. Last time they brought evil General Viggo to justice. Viggo, a giant sinister white cat – the Blofeld of the piece, complete with a small bald human as his pet.
Now he has returned, and with the mighty resources of Viggo Industries behind him, is once again planning conquest. This time Viggo has ordered his army of stupid bears to kidnap the Fur Fighters families. So now take control of the six heroes’ in a brave, cunning and almost co-ordinated attempt to save their families and defeat General Viggo once and for all!

Meet the Fur Fighters:

Roofus
Species: Hound
Special Skill: Burrowing

Chang
Species: Fire Fox
Special Skill: Squeezing through holes

Juliette
Species: Pussycat
Special Skill: Climbing

Rico
Species: Penguin
Special Skill: Swimming

Bungalow
Species: Kangaroo
Special Skill: High Jumping

Tweek
Species: Dragon
Special Skill: Gliding

In order to change character you must find and use teleports, which are strategically placed around the different worlds and levels within, and also act as save points. You get an action adventure and third person shooter with Fur Fighters, and both really are top notch. There are six huge worlds to explore; each can be entered from the Fur Fighters village once certain criteria have been met. They vary greatly and have several levels to complete, each containing Fur Fighter babies to find and rescue. Once you clear the area of enemies you are free to solve the puzzles, which will allow you to save your families. Most are logical and importantly fun to resolve, and they mostly need your special skills to reach them, but each baby can only be rescued by its own parent (baby dog – Roofus, baby cat – Juilette). So you will have to use a bit of lateral thinking, especially in the later levels.

Cut scenes pop up throughout the game to help the Bond-style story along. Your General, a ghostly walrus, and his Sergeant offer help regularly with clues of what to do next. Everything in Fur Fighters: Viggos Revenge has that polished look to it, and a real sense of achievement is reached when you rescue one of your own.
The shooter part of the game is also extremely enjoyable, and really blends well with the adventure and platform style of play. The guys at Bizarre Creations are obviously ‘Goldeneye’ players, and have included some classic weapons including rocket launcher, shotgun and plasma blaster. They have even put in a multiplayer section; take on up to four players in various film-inspired locations.

The graphics in Fur Fighters are simply stunning, and look fantastic, particularly if you are using the RGB scart lead. Viggo’s Revenge uses the ‘Cel Shading’ technique, as in games like ‘Jet Set Radio’ and ‘Wacky Races’. The frame rate has been improved upon from the Dreamcast version; it never really drops below 60fps.

Sound is used very well, with some great British comedy voice-overs, but unfortunately there are a few lip sync problems. The music is excellent, and changes style depending on which Fur Fighter you are controlling, and sound effects for the guns are spot on.
The PAL release of Fur Fighters is one of the best I have seen. It has a 60htz mode, the all-important screen adjust, and auto-loads all of your preferences upon loading.

Fur Fighters: Viggo's Revenge is not only a fantastic port, but also a great game in its own right, bringing a much needed action adventure onto the Playstaion 2.

 Review Summary:
A completely unique style of gameplay - combining 3rd person shooter with action adventure and puzzle solving. Devasting fire power including shotguns, rocket launchers, flamethrowers, and of course, beware of flying cows! Play as all six Fur Fighters using their individual skills to obliterate the bad guys and solve puzzles.
