14th April 2001:
Quake 3: Revolution
Will Quake be crowned king of the FPS?
Posted by John Grothier - PlayStation 2 - UK and Europe

It’s hard to believe that its now the best part of a decade, since the first game that really scared the pants off me came into being. Who could forget playing Doom? The original ‘first person shooter’ was an experience I will never forget. Spending hours with the lights switched off, the moans of the undead in the distance; it was like being in a horror film, a very scary experience at the time.

Now ‘id’ and ‘Bullfrog’ have teamed up to give the PS2 Quake III: Revolution, and they could not have done a better job. Quake III has to be the king of FPS. Originally released as Quake III: Arena on the PC in 1999, the PS2 version has been adapted with all the levels from Arena, plus Team Arena and at least five levels exclusive to the PS2. That makes a grand total of thirty-five levels for this version. Other exclusive features include an excellent single player campaign where you can build up your character, RPG style. Frag well and your characters statistics will increase with experience gained. Max health, armour, attack power and speed will grow. You can also use this character in multiplayer battles with your friends, even storing them on your friends PS2 as a ‘bot’. Medals are also awarded for your combat performance. If you have earned the required amount, items will be issued for use in the next arena.

The single player campaign is much stronger than any other FPS on the PS2 at the moment. Game modes include; Deathmatch, Capture The Flag, Elimination and Skirmish modes. The arenas are well designed with water, lava, toxic waste pits and my personal favourite the launching pads. Step on one of these and you can frag in mid air! An incredible amount of thought has gone into designing the arenas, and it shows. All the weapons you would expect of Quake are here - including the chaingun, nailgun, rocket launcher and lightning gun. The ‘BFG’ also makes an appearance.

The control system in Quake III is very responsive. I would strongly recommend selecting the ‘Advanced’ setting. This is as close as you will get to a mouse and keyboard style of control. I actually favour it. Once you get used to it you will become deadly.

The graphics in Quake III: Revolution are stunning, It looks as good as its PC counterpart, fantastic lighting effects, ultra smooth frame rates and incredible texture resolution. Beautiful. The levels are as I mentioned expertly designed making it a pleasure to play. Sound is again superb, each weapon sounds as it should, and music is there to build up that tension. Spot on.

The PAL release of Quake III: Revolution is a good conversion. Although lacking a 60htz mode it still plays at a steady 60fps even when major amounts of fragging are going on. A screen adjust option is included, and also a welcome widescreen mode.
PC gamers may smirk at Quake III on the PS2 for only the one reason – no online play. It is impossible for any PS2 title, at the moment, to have any online features. Rest assured, it will come. In the meantime hook up your PS2 to a nice big widescreen television, invite a few mates round for some multi-tap goodness and watch those PC heads drop!

Quake III: Revolution is a must have title for your PS2; it is the king of first person shooters.
