30th April 2002:
Sky Odyssey
At last this Flight Adventure touches down in Europe!
Posted by John Grothier - PlayStation 2 - UK and Europe

Most of the classic games I can think of involve killing, blowing things up, fighting or racing, but once in a blue moon a game worthy of classic status comes along, that shares none of the usual traits.

The best way to describe Sky Odyssey is to call it a ‘Flight Adventure’, and it really is. The main part of the game is the ‘Adventure Mode’; select one of three available aircraft at the start of play – choose from a ‘Swordfish MK I’, (a bi-plane), a ‘Pulse Jet “test type” and a ‘BF-109’ an WW II fighter. Then let the journey begin.

The object of the adventure mode is to find the four pieces of a lost map on three islands, which will lead to a hidden forth island, ‘Destin’. Where the real challenge lies with Sky Odyssey is the incredible thought and design of each level. You will fly down ravines with rocks and boulders falling from either side, try to refuel from a moving train, fly into narrow caves avoiding the stalactites and stalagmites, even try to climb over a huge snow covered mountain range in the middle of a blizzard! Each level has an original feel to it, and is most importantly fun to play.

Once you get the hang of flying your aircraft you can start pulling off some impressive tricks and stunts. At the end of the mission you will be graded accordingly. If its high enough you will be awarded with parts for your plane. Choose from wings, engine, tyres and a few special items to make your craft your own. There is even an option to paint your plane with different colours and designs. You can even draw your own emblem, and whatever changes are made appear on your aircraft in all modes of play. The replay option is a great inclusion and really does show off the game, and perhaps even your flying skills! That’s the one thing that becomes apparent with Sky Odyssey; it’s filled with neat touches everywhere.

As well as the adventure mode, there is the obligatory training mode, also a target mode where you can earn medals by flying through different coloured targets. Gain the right amount and you can ‘buy’ some interesting add-ons for your aircraft. Sky canvas mode allows you to draw shapes in the sky, and a free flight option is included - once a level is completed in the adventure mode, you can select that area and fly with any plane earned.

The graphics in Sky Odyssey are a bit of a mixed bag, the landscapes and textures are a little rough in places, and a few ‘jaggies’ make an unwelcome appearance, but the levels are simply huge. The weather effects, however, are incredible and never short of stunning. Rain, wind, and snow are faithfully reproduced – they really have to be seen to be believed!

The sound is used to great effect with a very ‘Saturday morning cinema’ musical score that’s very rousing. Sound effects for the planes are spot on, and you can also ‘hear’ the weather – the patter of the rain and the rumble of thunder.
